Sally Miller Visits the Pride Center
In 2012 Sally Miller visited the San Joaquin Pride Center in Stockton to discuss her memoir titled Two Women, Five Decades: From Closeted Isolation to Twenty-First Century Community. This speaking engagement on February 11th 2012 was to be the beginning of a montly lecture series that related to the LGBTQ+ community. Author Joseph McGinnis also shared his book This Shadow Follows Me at the event.
In this newspaper article it explains that Miller felt suicidal as a youth because of her sexuality. She felt a greater sense of belonging when she met her partner Peg Keranen but they still felt out of place when thye moved to Stockton in 1969. This changed when Miller formed The Delta Women in 1986 whihc was a social group for lesbians.
This article shows the impact of discrimination on Miller's life and how she tried to make a difference. Perhaps this is what led her to be so accepting of students.
