Changes in the UoP STEM departments

University of the Pacific 1971 Catalog

This scan of the 1971 class catlog suggests that chemistry classes were previously held in the South-West hall, prior to the construstion of the Classroom Building.  Considering several of the natural science departments are now hosted in the Classroom Building, this change in location could have possibly contributed to the decline in class sizes.

On the same catalog, the mathematics courses are shown being held in the Wendle-Philips Center.  The mathematics department is another department which, like the chemistry department, is in the classroom building.  Again, as of 1971, the classroom building wasn’t constructed yet which explains why there was a relocation at some point.

Interestingly, at the time the catalog was printed, there appeared to have been an active marine science department.  This department held classes somewhere designated the “Pacific Marine Station.”  At the time of writing this, I had no idea that marine biology of this level was ever offered at UoP.  More research will be required to conclude why this field of study seemingly disappeared from the Stockton campus.
